Connecting to EECS Home Directory with FTP

In order to connect to your EECS home directory, you will need a program for running FTP. There are multiple options available for using FTP such as Filezilla, WinSCP, and FireFTP.

This article will focus on the downloading, installation, and usage of Filezilla.

DOWNLOADING and INSTALLATION

Go to https://filezilla-project.org/ to begin the downloading process.
You should see a link that looks like this:

Click on the "Download FileZilla Client" Button.
You should now be on the Client Download page and see a link that looks like this:

Click on the green "Download FileZilla Client" Button. You only need the free version, but the pro version works as well.
IMPORTANT: The location of the download button switches sides randomly so read before you click.

Click the Download button.

If you are running Internet Explorer, there will be a pop up window that looks like this:

Click on Run to start the installation.




If you are running Firefox, a window like this will pop up:

Click on Save File.
Then open the download manager at the top of the window.

Double Click on the first file to start the installer.



If you are running Chrome, you will get a bar at the bottom of the window that shows the download that will look like this:

Click the file that just appeared on the bar and you will start the installer.

Installation
First your computer will ask for permission to install this program.
The first window that pops up will look like this:

Click on the "I agree" button.
This window should pop up:

If you aren't prompted to "install the program for all users or just yourself" skip this step.
Select either option after considering who else will be using this computer.
Click the "Next >" Button

This window should pop up:

Click the "Next >" button.

This window should pop up:

Click the "Next >" button.

Click the "Next >" button.

From this point on uncheck all checkboxes and keep clicking next. The installer will try to install other third party programs if you don't uncheck the boxes.

Filezilla will begin installation, it should only take two to three minutes to install.
When it is done click the "Finish button"

Using Filezilla

When you open Filezilla, you should get a window that looks like this:

To connect to your home directory, use this bar:

In the Host field, use type in the domain of any of our eecs ssh hosts, a list can be found here!
For the username and password, use your EECS credentials.
For the port, use port 22.

If you entered the information correctly, you should get a window that looks like this:

Here, you can save your server and login info for later.

Once connected, your Directory windows should look something like this:

The pane on the left side are your local host directories and the windows.

The pane on the right side are now your EECS directories and files.

To transfer files between your computer and the server select the file you want to move and drag it to the opposite side. (From the left panel to the right panel or vice versa)
